Homeschoolers' Comments

"I am using the first grade books. They are easy to teach and take the guess work out of trying to explain concepts. I find it hard to explain things so my child can understand. The teacher's manual introduces and reinforces new concepts (like number sentence, multiply counting) without me realizing I am teaching a new concept. Next thing I know, he understands how to add and subtract without me getting all hung up over how to explain it. Highly recommended especially for first time teacher/parents who are afraid they can't teach."

I have purchased the DIVE cd’s for my children for Saxon 54 and 76. I have to say how impressed I am and how much I LOVE using them. It has made using Saxon so easy for me! Stacy, 2002 Mother of 4

My daughter has gone from C’s and sometimes D’s before using the DIVE CD’s to A’s and B’s on her lessons! Your easy to understand step-by-step method of instruction is so like my favorite college math teacher that I knew the first time I sat down and watched the lessons that your DIVE CD’s were a winner. DIVE Instructional CD-Rom for Saxon Calculus
Calculus is typically taught for three semesters starting in the spring of 11th grade. This CD-ROM teaches all 148 Lessons step-by-step. Because Saxon uses an incremental teaching approach, each lecture is only about 10-20 minutes long. Dr. Shormann builds lesson upon lesson, slowly developing complex concepts from bite sized lessons that are easy to grasp. Students watch the lecture and take notes, working the practice problems Dr. Shormann presents, and pausing and rewinding as necessary until a concept is understood. If students want additional practice, they can complete the Example problems and Practice Set in the Saxon textbook. After the lesson, students complete the 30-question Problem Set in the Saxon text. While a few problems in the Problem Set come from the new concept, most problems come from previous lessons. Each problem is cross-referenced back to the lesson where it was taught, allowing students to quickly review any concept.

This unique method of spiral review improves critical thinking skills, increases long term retention, and raises standardized test scores. However, this method can be difficult to teach because of the seemingly random presentation of topics. That is why Saxon's founder John Saxon recommended teacher training for all his courses. DIVE CDs provide that teacher, as Dr. Shormann explains how new topics connect to previously learned material, helping students see the "big picture". Also, when a student gets stuck or forgets how to work a problem, they simply click on the DIVE lesson where the concept was originally taught and watch that lesson again. The same can be done when correcting tests. This makes it very easy to fill in any gaps as they show up.

Why take calculus? Since its creation over 300 years ago, calculus has made a tremendous impact on our world. The multitudes of technological advances made possible by calculus and its founding by Christian men make calculus a course all parents should want their children to study in high school. To reach this goal, math must be taught almost every day, beginning as early as kindergarten. To finish calculus in high school, a student needs to take Algebra 1 in 8th grade, Algebra 2 in 9th grade, followed by 3 semesters of Advanced Math and three semester of Calculus. If a student is a senior and only has 2 semesters left, they can complete the first 110 calculus lessons.

Saxon Calculus is designed for prospective math majors in college as well as students preparing for engineering, physics, business analysis, or the life sciences. This course covers all topics normally found in both the Advanced Placement AB and BC level programs. Problem sets contain multiple-choice and conceptually oriented problems similar to those in Advanced Placement exams. Also included are numerous applications to physics, chemistry, engineering, and business. Specific topics include limits, derivatives, integrals, differential equations, polar equations, vector equations, parametric equations, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, power series and many more.

Earn College Credit for Calculus! Saxon Calculus contains almost all the material covered on the CLEP Calculus exam and AP Calculus exams, and the CLEP Professor Calculus course is included FREE on the DIVE Calculus CD. If a student completes through lesson 110, with a little extra study using CLEP Professor they can easily pass the CLEP Calculus Exam or AP Calculus AB Exam. Students completing the entire Saxon Calculus textbook can pass the AP Calculus BC exam, earning 8 college credits for Calculus! The CLEP Professor Calculus does not currently contain prep materials for the AP Calculus BC Exam. Click the CLEP Professor link to the left to learn more.

All DIVE courses are taught from a Christian foundation. Dr. Shormann believes that God gave us mathematics primarily as a tool to study His creation, which is why mathematics is considered the language of science. Mathematics is also useful in interacting with each other and in developing reasoning and problem solving skills. Dr. Shormann uses Scripture and history to remind students that God is the author of all knowledge. Dr. Shormann also gives friendly reminders to students to honor their parents by doing excellent schoolwork.

Study tip: There are 30 problems in each Problem Set, and Dr. Shormann recommends students complete 3 out of every 4 sets. A typical week of math involves 4 lessons and a test, and if students complete 90 homework problems, take notes on all DIVE lectures, and complete a Saxon test, Dr. Shormann has found that this is plenty of math for one week for most students. If test scores begin to fall lower than 80%, then the student needs more practice and should complete all problems in the lesson until test scores improve. Students should always take notes on all DIVE Lectures and work out all practice problems presented in the lecture. Click on Parent Tips for more information on how to grade tests and homework.

DIVE Instructional CD-Rom for Saxon Algebra 2
Algebra 2 is typically taught in 9th or 10th grade. This CD-ROM teaches all 129 Saxon Algebra 2 Lessons step-by-step. Because Saxon uses an incremental teaching approach, each lecture is only about 15 minutes long. Dr. Shormann builds lesson upon lesson, slowly developing complex concepts from bite-sized lessons that are easy to grasp. Students watch the lecture and take notes, working the practice problems Dr. Shormann presents, and pausing and rewinding as necessary until a concept is understood. Algebra 2 covers all topics traditionally covered in a second-year algebra course as well as a full semester of geometry. Time is spent developing geometric concepts and writing proof outlines. Real-world problems are included along with applications to other subjects such as physics and chemistry. Other topics include solving systems of linear and nonlinear equations, statistics and probability, graphing and developing equations from experimental data, and basic trigonometry. With Saxon and DIVE, students learn geometry alongside algebra, similar to how high school math is taught in Europe and Asia. Incidentally, European and Asian students consistently outperform American students on international math tests. Students will also become familiar with important concepts such as Unit Multipliers, Functions, Scientific Notation, Vectors, and Basic Statistics, which will greatly increase their chances of understanding higher maths and math-based science concepts. Saxon Algebra 1 and 2 contain all the algebra and geometry concepts covered on the College Board's SAT and PSAT tests.

Advanced Math contains all the concepts typically covered in a High School Pre-Calculus course. This course fully integrates topics for algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, discrete mathematics, and mathematical analysis. Word problems are developed throughout the problem sets and become progressively more elaborate. With this practice, high school level students will be able to solve challenging problems such as rate problems and work problems involving abstract quantities. Conceptually oriented problems that help prepare students for college entrance exams (such as the ACT and SAT) are included in the problem sets. In addition, students will learn geometry alongside algebra, similar to how high school math is taught in Europe and Asia. Incidentally, European and Asian students consistently outperform American students on international math tests. Completing Saxon Algebra 1, 2, and the first half of Advanced Math, 2nd ed., is equivalent to two credits of algebra and one credit of geometry.

DIVE Instructional CD-Rom for Saxon Algebra 1/2 - 3rd Edition
Algebra ½, 3rd ed., is typically taught in 7th or 8th grade. This CD-ROM teaches all 123 Saxon Algebra 1/2 Lessons, plus the 10 Additional Topics, step-by-step. Because Saxon uses an incremental teaching approach, each lecture is only about 10-15 minutes long. Dr. Shormann builds lesson upon lesson, slowly developing complex concepts from bite-sized lessons that are easy to grasp. Algebra 1/2 thoroughly prepares students for Algebra 1 and beyond by building on Math 7/6 and Math 8/7. It is a culmination of pre-algebra mathematics and skills, plus and continues to build and expand on geometry while giving a thorough review of fractions, decimals and percent. Algebra ½ is typically skipped if students maintain an 80+ average on Math 87 2nd or 3rd Edition timed tests. However, this book can be completed in place of Math 87 as well. The only difference between 87 and Alg. ½ is that Math 87 has more practice on fractions, percents, decimals, and ratios while Algebra ½ has more pre-algebra concepts. They both do a good job of preparing students for Algebra 1 but we generally recommend Math 87 3rd Edition over Algebra ½ because most students need more work on building a strong foundation in basic mathematics, which makes the transition to algebra much easier.

Math 8/7 is a pre-algebra program for students who have completed Math 76. While the Math 87 1st edition was generally skipped, the updated and expanded 2nd or 3rd editions are now recommended for all students because they provide extensive practice with fraction/decimal/percent conversion, geometry, unit multipliers, and other foundational concepts which are essential skills for Algebra I and other upper level high school science and math courses. If your child consistently scores 85% or better on Math 87 2nd or 3rd Edition timed tests, Dr. Shormann recommends skipping Algebra ½ and moving to Algebra 1. Math 87 includes a range of upper-level skills and concepts such as scientific notation, complex statistics, arcs, sectors, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Success in math requires that students spend time memorizing basic facts, and Saxon 8/7 Facts Practice Worksheets provide plenty of facts practice.

DIVE Instructional CD-Rom Physics CD
DIVE Physics is the 4th and final college-preparatory, high school science course offered by DIVE. Typically completed in 11th or 12th grade, DIVE Physics is a full-year course teaching concepts found in a typical high school AP physics course, preparing students for the AP Physics exam. Topics include but are not limited to Science and Christianity, Newton’s laws, speed and velocity, torque, impulse/momentum, relativity theory, work, gases and thermodynamics, potential and kinetic energy, electricity and magnetism, circuit theory and Ohm’s law, and reflection and refraction. DIVE Physics contains 100 lectures, one for each lesson in the Saxon Physics textbook.

There are 23 video labs, most of which are taught using the scientific method. Students formulate a hypothesis, perform the experiment, and then use the results to determine whether their hypothesis was correct. The majority of DIVE Physics labs use equipment that is too cost-prohibitive for home use, and therefore a supply list is not currently available for the labs. A printable workbook is included containing all lab activities.

Quarterly exams are an integral part of DIVE Physics, as they promote study habits similar to what a student should expect in college, where exams are given infrequently, yet cover several weeks of material. Students prepare for the quarterly exams by studying their weekly Saxon tests. If they understand the material on the Saxon weekly tests, then the quarterly exams are not difficult. A grade calculator is also provided. Parents simply enter homework, lab, Saxon weekly test and DIVE quarterly exam grades into the calculator, and it automatically calculates the student’s overall grade.

Upon completion of DIVE Physics, students who want to go a step further can use the CLEP Professor course to prepare for the AP Physics “B” Exam (The College Board does not offer a CLEP Physics exam). CLEP Professor is designed to bridge the gap between high school science and college credit. By using DIVE Science, the bridge becomes much shorter, and with a little extra study using CLEP Professor, the student can attempt the AP Physics B exam, saving themselves both time and money on future college coursework. Students using DIVE Physics will also become skilled at working with the scientific method, will be familiar with the use of technology in science, and will develop their lab skills above and beyond most of their peers. Most importantly, students will have a better understanding and appreciation for the rich Christian heritage that exists in science, and will better understand the importance of studying His word and His works as they seek to become good rulers of His creation.

Incidentally, European and Asian students consistently outperform American students on international math tests. Students will also become familiar with important concepts such as Unit Multipliers, Functions, Scientific Notation, and Basic Statistics, which will greatly increase their chances of understanding higher maths and math-based science concepts. Saxon Algebra 1 and 2 contain all the algebra and geometry concepts covered on the College Board's SAT and PSAT tests.

Saxon Calculus - Home School Set
Includes Student Text, Answer Key and Tests. Calculus is made up of four instructional components: Introduction of the New Increment, Examples with Complete Solutions, Daily Problem Sets, and Cumulative Tests. Calculus treats all the topics normally covered in an Advanced Placement AB-level calculus program, as well as many from a BC-level program. The text begins with a review of the mathematical concepts and skills required for calculus. In the early problem sets, students practice setting up word problems they will later encounter as calculus problems. The problem sets contain multiple-choice and conceptually-oriented problems similar to those found on the Advanced Placement examination. Whenever possible, an intuitive introduction precedes a rigorous examination of a concept. Proofs are provided for all important theorems. For example, three proofs, one intuitive and two rigorous, are given for the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Numerous applications to physics, chemistry, engineering, and business are also treated in both the lessons and the problem sets. Use of this text has allowed students to take the Advanced Placement examination and score well.

DIVE Instructional CD-Rom for Geometry
The DIVE CD-ROM teaches each of the 120 lessons and 12 Investigations, plus all the Construction and Technology Labs found in the Saxon Geometry textbook. Each lecture is about 10-20 minutes long. A Saxon Geometry 1st Edition Home Study Kit with Solutions Manual is required. Saxon Geometry is recommended for students who used another curriculum besides Saxon for Algebra 1 and 2, or for current Saxon students who do not plan on attending college. In this case, Saxon Algebra 1, 2, and Geometry would suffice for high school mathematics, although Dr. Shormann encourages all students to do more than just the minimum requirements. College-bound students should finish Advanced Math, and preferably Calculus, as many studies show a direct correlation between college success and the level of mathematics completed in high school.

Geometry includes all topics in a high school geometry course, including perspective, space, and dimension associated with practical and axiomatic geometry. Students learn how to apply and calculate measurements of lengths, heights, circumference, areas, and volumes. Saxon Geometry introduces trigonometry and allows students to work with transformations. Students will use logic to create proofs and constructions and will work with key geometry theorems and proofs. Students use technology such as spreadsheets, graphing calculators, and geometry software to explore and understand geometry.

Geometry is typically taught in 9th or 10th grade. Because Saxon uses an incremental teaching approach, each DIVE lecture is only about 10-20 minutes long. Saxon builds lesson upon lesson, slowly developing complex concepts from bite-sized lessons that are easy to grasp. Students watch the DIVE lecture and take notes, working the practice problems Dr. Shormann presents, pausing and rewinding as necessary until a concept is understood.

Also, when a student gets stuck or forgets how to work a problem, they simply click on the DIVE lecture where the concept was originally taught and watch that lesson again. The same can be done when correcting tests. This makes it very easy to fill in any gaps as they show up.

Geometry contains all the concepts typically covered in a High School Geometry course. Saxon's traditional high school texts teach geometry together with algebra, similar to how high school math is taught in Europe and Asia. Incidentally, European and Asian students consistently outperform American students on international math tests. Although the new Saxon Geometry does include algebra, geometry is the main focus.

All DIVE courses are taught from a Christian foundation. Dr. Shormann believes that God gave us mathematics primarily as a tool to study His creation, which is why mathematics is considered the language of science. Mathematics is also useful in interacting with each other and in developing reasoning and problem solving skills. Dr. Shormann uses Scripture to remind students that God is the author of all knowledge. Dr. Shormann also gives friendly reminders to students to honor their parents by doing excellent schoolwork. In DIVE Geometry, Dr. Shormann points out many important historical facts about geometry, and discusses many of the Christian mathematicians who used or discovered new ideas in geometry.

Dr. Shormann encourages parents to have their children do Algebra I in 8th grade, then continue with Saxon Algebra 2 in 9th grade, followed by 3 semesters of Saxon Advanced Math and 3 semesters of Saxon Calculus. Because of the time required, taking a separate geometry course before or after Algebra 2 limits a student's ability to complete Calculus in high school. For students gifted in mathematics ability, completing Saxon Geometry in two years, concurrently with Saxon Algebra 1 and 2, is recommended. To read more on why Dr. Shormann encourages finishing Calculus in high school, please read the Calculus course description.
