Writing Strands

This program yields maximum writing benefits--with minimum teaching effort! Because of younger children's learning abilities, only Levels 1 and 2 require your involvement as teacher. Levels 3 and up encourage your students to be self-directed in completing assignments in various types of writing -- from expository to creative. Especially helpful for parents who lack confidence in teaching writing skills. The texts explain the concepts directly to the students and give many examples of the skills being taught. Please Note: SPECIFY LEVEL! Level 2 is grade 2; thereafter each level increases in difficulty but doesn't necessarily correspond to grade level.

Homeschoolers' Comments

My daughter began using Writing Strands in 6th grade. Even though we started in Book 3, she found the book interesting, and quickly moved onto Book 4. The author writes directly to the student in an often humorous manner which was quite enjoyable to her and allowed her to work primarily on her own. I saw great improvement in her writing skills through using this curriculum. BT - Georgia

Writing Strands Level 2
Be sure to read 'Please Note:' above regarding grade level before ordering.

Introduces the skill of giving thoughts and experiences to others in written form. When a child can write by himself (spelling doesn't count) a sentence similar to, "We live on the corner," or "The dog is big," that child is ready for this level. This is the only book from which parents must teach. The rest of the series is written for and to the students, and the assignments are written in such a way that the students can write independently. Even at this level, the assignments produce reports, essays or pieces of fiction.

Writing Strands Level 1
Very different from the rest of the Writing Strands series, Writing Strands 1, is designed for families of children not yet writing. It has games, programs and projects to help young children understand that words are not just things to use to get what they want, but that they can have fun with them. It is a way to have a family demonstrate its value of language use, to present to children models of behavior, and to have all the members of the family help convince the youngest members that the family they are part of lives creating and sharing through language. It consists of a manual of games and projects and an audio CD of examples, made by the author and his son, of what can be done for and with very young children.

Writing Strands Creating Fiction
Presents 17 elements of short story writing with detailed and explicit explanations and directions. It also has these exercises written by high school students. It shows students how to write short stories and how to submit them to publishers. These are very sophisticated exercises and should be attempted only by serious young writers. Each of the exercises in this level has, in the index, a student's paper based on it just as it was handed in to the teacher. There is an 18th exercise that asks students to use the 17 skills in the writing of a short story.

Writing Strands Evaluating Writing
Parents' manual for 'Writing Strands'. From the author:

I am often asked by homeschooling parents, "How do I evaluate my children's writing?" This is not an easy question for me to answer because I find evaluation challenging, even after 30 years of evaluating children's writing and talking to them about it.

There are some things that children do need that I am sure you can give them. They need to feel good about what they do. This is just like you and me. We need this, too, and we're adults. This is one of the very good reasons that so many parents are homeschooling. Their kids weren't feeling good about what they were learning (or not learning) in school.

Making your children feel good about learning to write is not hard to do. It has a lot to do with your attitude as each child watches you react to what has been written. I think of it this way: if my wife made a list every night of all the things I did wrong during the day and told me how much I needed to learn, I would run away from home.

What kills children's desire to write is, when they put their hearts on a page—and this is exactly what they do when they write—and mom looks at it and says, "This is nice, but look at that spelling. You didn't learn anything about spelling all year. And the punctuation! We've got to get back to the basics of commas. Let me find my red pen and point out all of these errors for you." These children will want to run away from writing, and so would I.

An important thing to keep in mind is that children want to learn and want to please their parents. As a teacher, what a great position you're in. Find something absolutely wonderful about what has been written and ask your child to read that aloud. Then ask your child to read it to you. Then ask your husband or wife to read it. And then ask your child to read it to you both because you both think it's so beautiful. Now your child will feel good about what's been written. At this point, rather than point out all the things that are wrong with the paper, you can show one or two ways to make it even better. Say that the writing is almost perfect, and to make it perfect, you have one rule that you'd like to explain. Read that one rule and explain how it works. Help your child apply that rule to the writing. This will demonstrate what that application has done to that almost perfect sentence. Now, read it again and call it perfect! Your children will break their hearts trying to write perfect sentences for you.

Reading Strands
The ideas presented here are based on the knowledge that good literature can enrich anyone's life. This book instructs parents in a method of examining ideas in literature by asking questions that help children to think beyond the surface of the stories. Finding just the right literature, at just the right level, and covering topics your child will delight in are stressed. While most of the instruction is appropriate for all ages, some of the concepts, including parody, satire, and voice/point of view, would be best reserved for older students. Improve your ability to deeply engage your children in the books they are reading!
